The final talk at D.I.C.E. 2016 was between Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima and movie director/writer Guillermo del Toro. Although del Toro recently stated “I will never again get involved in video games,” following the cancellation of InSane at THQ and Silent Hills at Konami, he’s a part of games again, at least to discuss them at D.I.C.E. He and Kojima revealed how their paths crossed as well as video games’ place in entertainment.
Kojima first met del Toro in Japan for the release of Hellboy 2, but had previously interacted with him when he found out he was a fan of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Del Toro added that when he and Kojima first me they learned they had a lot in common, including anime, toys, and storytelling ideas. He even said they would sing anime theme songs together, Kojima doing them in Japanese, and del Toro in Spanish.
The two creators exchanged praise for each others work, Kojima even showed his appreciation of del Toro’s film Pan’s Labyrinth when he held up his hands to his head to reveal he drew eyes on his palms, just like the film’s the Pale Man character.
Del Toro says the potential video games have is limitless, but that their creativity can be stifled by “the bastards with money.” He also compared giant studios to dinosaurs that are running toward a cliff. They should turn to change direction at times, but are so heavy and often fall.
Kojima said the biggest difference between games and movies is you can’t a player to be someone they don’t want to be. He referenced Aliens ending in which Ripley approaches the Alien Queen. A player in a game wouldn’t do that, he said. He says the movies move you along with those characters, whereas players dictate the pacing in games.
Keighley asked Kojima why make another big game over a comic or movie, and Kojima said he has been making games for over 30 years, and he thought about making a small indie game or movie, but then he talked to friends around the world. They all told him you have fans around the world and want the next big thing from you. You don’t have time to do small indie things, he said. He took that advice and is now assembling a new studio to work on his next game.
Del Toro and Kojima said that they both want to work with each other again, but didn’t specify what that would be, or even if it would be a game or movie or something else.
Regarding Kojima’s next project, he says he feels “free right now” creatively, and is trying to make a big game with a small team. He hopes the project speaks to what he wants and also what fans want. He says he has to be careful with what he does, however, but has no patience in changing his vision to sell more games. He just wants to make something people will play and enjoy.
At the end of the talk, Del Toro said he’s currently playing Fallout 4, but is struggling with it, as he is dying frequently.
